New Orleans: The Original Cafe Du Monde Coffee House

Is there any more iconic New Orleans French Quarter institution than the “Original” Café du Monde Coffee Stand established in 1862? No ma’am, but because it is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – tourists are in monumental lines waiting for hot fried pâte à choux beignets topped with a mountain of powdered sugar and a dark-roasted chicory café au lait.

The question then becomes, is it worth it?

The answer is yes, but locals never, ever, go at peak hours. Late night – before 7am is when they can sit down to enjoy their beignets and coffee in peace.

When it is hotter than you-know-where in summer, beat the heat under ceiling fans and order the coffee iced.
